F. Sionil Jose, one of the great Philippine prose writers, listens intently to a talk by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera last July at the Escaler Hall in Ateneo de Manila University.
I had a hard time back in high school when our class read his novel Mass for our English class. And as I sat about a couple of feet from him that day, I must say, he looked frail yet strong at the same time. He would lean on his cane then lean back on his seat and vice versa. Time really took its toll on him. But I guess when you've lived to be that age and did all than you can possibly do at that age, you can just kick back, relax, and take your merry time. I guess that's the kind of life worth living - you experienced and lived life to its full potential. And as you look back on your life when you get to be at the age when walking down a flight of stairs seem like walking down a hill, you can proudly say that you actually LIVED to be the person that you are fully capable of being.
***As always, for more information on F. Sionil Jose, go here. I should work for Wikipedia. Haha!

@Duncan Galbraith: thanks, Duncan.
I like your description and your shot really does convey the mood. My only comment is that the background is quite distracting for this portrait.

@Ryan Yam: Be as it is, yes I admit the background is cluttered and a bit distracting. But sometimes in photography, what's more important is the story the photographer wants to tell through his work. Technical aspects would manifest later. Now, I could've spent hours in Photoshop dodging and burning, adding so-and-so effects, filters, gaussian-whatever blurs, but wouldn't it have been easier for me to just post the image and show the mood that I want to convey?
But I'll try to watch out for cluttered backgrounds next time. Thanks for dropping by!
What a wonderful portrait Hubert! I appreciated your precis about the photo. Initially I thought I was looking at a grieving man .... now I see he is in deep concentration. I don't know F. Sionil Jose's work, yet seem to remember hearing about 'The Pretenders' somewhere in the past. I am hunting around for some good book to read over summer. I'll begin with that. Thanks for the inspiration!

@Helen: Wow thanks for being inspired. Hope you find more of his books. Happy reading! Thanks for dropping by!
Hi Hubert! I have been enjoying your photos and stories that go with them. I particularly like this one for a number of reasons, the first being that as a Philippine-born Australian (I moved here when I was 6), I am so ashamed at how little I know about Filipino culture. This photo has given me a starting point for Filipino literature. Keep up the great work!

@Charisse Farr: Wow thanks! Well, don't be ashamed. I've been here all my life and I haven't even scratched on the surface of Philippine culture. What I know is limited to my, well, still limited experiences. But as long as I'm helping you find your roots through my stories, then it's all good! Thanks for dropping by!
Is this F. Sionil Jose ? I first thought it was a Frenchman after a heavy meal. (No disrespect intended). Sionil Jose is one of the greatest Filipino writers.

@Sidney: Yep that's him. I didn't even recognize him at first. I thought it was just an old guy (no disrespect intended, too). Can anyone say looks can be deceiving? Thanks for dropping by!
